I'm ready to return to state politics: Sangma

Shillong, Dec 17 (UNI) Former Lok Sabha Speaker and NCP leader Purno A Sangma today said that he was ready to leave national politics and return to state politics in Meghalaya if necessary.

''If people wanted me, I have no problems coming back to state politics,'' Mr Sangma told reporters here today, adding that he would not hesitate to ''lead'' the state after 2008 assembly elections.

At present, the veteran political leader from Northeast said, that Meghalaya has come to a standstill, as there was no suitable leader to lead the state.

''There is an urgent need of ''young and strong'' leaders to take up the mantle for benefit of the state,'' Mr Sangma said, pointing out that his party was trying to bring in as many young and educated candidates to contest the state's assembly polls.

Meghalaya goes to assembly polls from two years now.

Elaborating on the NCP's strategies for the state assembly polls, Mr Sangma said that his party would declare the list of its candidates one year ahead of the state polls.

He said the party would also start its preparation for the elections from next year onwards with holding of conference in every constituency highlighting NCP's programme and policies.
