Gujarat Bar tightens rules for lawyers

Ahmedabad, Dec 17 (UNI) The Bar Council of Gujarat at its general body meeting held here today decided that no advocate will be given the licence ('sanad') to practise if he is over 45 years of age after passing his bar exams from January 1, 2007.

This follows a resolution of April 23, 2005 passed by the Rules Committee.

The meeting was attended by Coucil chairman Bharat Gajipara, Vice-Chairman Virendrasinh R Chauhan, Executive Committee Chairman Jayantilal R Gandhi and 20 others, were present when the decision was taken, according to an official release here.

The council also passed a resolution to hike stamp charges from Rs five to Rs ten in the event of death of an advocate from January 1, 2007 for the claimants from Gujarat Advocate welfare fund. This applies to all those lawyers practicing in the talukas and district courts, the release said.

Those lawyers of the High Court and Tribunals, the stamp charges has been hiked to Rs 20 from the present Rs 10.
