AGO to hold demonstration to highlight problems

Guwahati, Dec 17: A 25-member team of Asom Gana Parishad (AGP), the main Opposition party in Congress-ruled Asom, will stage demonstration in front of Sansad Bhawan tomorrow to highlight different burning problems, which needed urgent attention of the Union government.

AGP president Brindabon Goswami today informed that though the party had earlier submitted a memorandum to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, seeking the Central government's intervention in finding a solution to these problems, including ULFA problem, the Union government remained lukewarm to the issues mentioned in the memorandum.

" As the Union government didn't do anything to solve the problems of the state raised by us, we are now compelled to take recourse to agitational path to highlight those in front of the nation and to start with we will demonstrate before the Sansad Bhawan tomorrow, " he said.

The AGP leader said the party would try to woo like-minded parties like Samajwadi Party (SP), Telegu Desam Party (TDP), CPI and CPI(M) to support its effort to burning problems of the state to national focus.

The demands, being harped on by the regional party, included early solution to the ULFA insurgency problem through political dialogue, withdrawal of the "draconian" Armed Forces (Special Power) Act, 1958, urgent steps to prevent proliferation of ISI activities in the state, implementation of the Assam Accord, updating the National Registrar of Citizens (NRC) to March, 1971 to facilitate detection and deportation of illegal migrants as per Assam Accord, central assistance to provide succour to about 30 lakh drought-hit farmers in the state, early solution to boundary disputes of Assam with neighbouring states, including Nagaland.
