65-year-old killed in cordon op in Kashmir

Srinagar, Dec 17: A 65-year-old man was killed during a search and cordon operation at Dooru Shahabad area in Anantnag district of south Kashmir early today, the police said.
Police said the man was gunned down when he came in an ambush laid by troops of 59 Rashtriya Rifles in the village.

However, the Army said the incident occurred in Tarigam village in Kulgam area of south Kashmir.

An Army Spokesperson said troops conducted a search and cordon operation in Tarigam village during the intervening night of December 16-17.

''At about 0630 hrs, an ambush party noticed a man approaching them. Despite being challenged several times by the troops, he did not stop but instead bent down leading the personnel to believe that he was taking out a weapon. The troops initially fired in the air but when he did not react, shot him in the leg. He was then shot dead,'' the spokesperson said.

The man was identified as Sonaullah Magray.

Investigations are on, he said.
