Sukhbans Kaur was a leader committed to secular values: PM

New Delhi, Dec 16 (UNI) Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has expressed grief over the demise of Ms Sukhbans Kaur, MP, who had distinguished herself as an agriculturalist, social worker, parliamentarian and above all, as an administrator.

''I am deeply grieved to learn of the sad demise of Smt Sukhbans Kaur,'' he said.

A well known and prominent personality of public life, her election to the Lok Sabha for five terms was testimony to her popularity, Dr Singh said.

A veteran parliamentarian, she also had the privilege of serving as a Member of the Rajya Sabha. Her role as a Member of Parliament was marked by her keen participation in the proceedings of both the Houses.

''I had the good fortune of working with her in the Rajya Sabha and profiting from my association with her. She had the distinction of being a Union Minister and in that capacity, established her credibility as an administrator.

''In her unfortunate passing away, the country has lost a leader with a long and rich experience in public life and with a commitment to secular values of our Republic,'' the Prime Minister said.
