Biggest women's car rally creates record

Mumbai, Dec 16: Red FM today launched a 'Women's Car Rally' that has found a place in the Limca Book of Records as the 'Biggest inter-city all women's car rally in India.' The purpose behind the rally, which was flagged-off at the MMRDA grounds near the Bandra-Kurla complex in suburban Mumbai is to promote breast cancer awareness in the country.

Approximately 360 women drivers and navigators participated in this exercise, which involves a drive from Mumbai to Pune and back.

''According to an international agency involved in research on cancer, breast cancer is the second most common cancer found among Indian women. The incidence is found to be prevalent more among urban women in the higher socio economic groups. The chances of cure largely depend on early diagnosis,'' vice-president of the women's cancer initiative at the Tata Memorial Hospital, Ms Devika Bhojwani said.

''Cervical cancer and breast cancer are the two most common types of cancer to afflict Indian women. However, if detected early the cure rate is greater than 80 percent,'' she added.

Bollywood fashion designer Neeta Lulla was also present on the occasion.

''We support the cause and through this all women's rally we have proved that we are behind nobody,'' she asserted.

The final winners will be felicitated tomorrow as the rally culminates with a performance from Indian pop singer Raageshwari.

The first prize is a cash reward of Rs 1 lakh and Rs 50,000 worth jewellery. The second prize involves cash of Rs 50,000 and jewellery worth Rs 30,000, while the third prize entitiles a cash reward of Rs 25,000 and jewellery worth Rs 20,000. These will be sponsored by Hoop, organisers said.
