Speaker disallows motion on goondas Act
Puducherry, Dec 15 (UNI) Puducherry Speaker R Radhakrishnan today disallowed a calling attention motion tabled by PMC legislature party leader K Lakshminarayanan for a debate on introduction of Goondas Act in the Union Territory to curb the rising crime rate.
Immediately after Chief Minister N Rangasamy concluded his statement, Mr Lakshminarayanan rose to request the admission of his calling attention motion.
During the last budget, members cutting across party lines had discussed the issue and wanted the introduction of the Act here.
Since then several problems had cropped up in the Union Territory and introduction of the Act seems to be the only way to curb crime.
Hence, he was insisting on the calling attention motion, he said.
The Speaker, disallowing the calling attention motion, said a proper reply on the issue would be made available to the member.
DMK member S P Sivakumar, who intervened, pointed out an incident in his constituency in which a French national was murdered and attempts made to grab his property. The Act had to be introduced here, he stressed.
