Opposition was ineffective, says Vilasrao Deshmukh

Nagpur, Dec 15 (UNI) The opposition in the Maharashtra Legislature had proven to be 'disintegrated and ineffective' during the winter session that concluded here today, Chief Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh said.

Speaking to reporters at the end of the proceedings, Mr Deshmukh described the winter session as 'very successful' for the ruling Democratic Front (DF).

The opposition leaders and the leaders of various groups had extended their full cooperation to the government during the proceedings as and when necessary, he said.

The government could not take a decision about the scrapping of the Urban Land Ceiling (ULC) act in the state during the session because of the imposition of the model code of conduct for the forthcoming civic polls, Mr Deshmukh said.

Reacting to the resignation submitted by Jogendra Kawade, as a member of the Legislative Council, he said the Upper House would lose a senior activist of the Ambedkarite movement. Mr Kawade had probably resigned because of his party's policy, he said.

A report by the Pune-based Yashada institute on the recent killing of four members of a dalit family by villagers in Khairlanji in Bhandara district of Vidarbha region had been handed over to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), which was now probing the case, Mr Deshmukh said. A copy of the report was also on the state government's Web site, he also said.
