Govt to crack down on illegal bars and pubs in Mumbai

Nagpur, Dec 15 (UNI) The Maharashtra Government will initiate action against the beer bars, pubs and discotheques operating illegally in Mumbai, in the next 15 days, Minister of State for Home Siddharam Mhetre assured the state Legislative Council today.

Replying to supplementaries on a question from Leader of Opposition Pandurang Phundkar, Mr Mhetre said the government would obtain information about such establishments operating without proper licence.

Mr Phundkar said there were 60 beer bars, pubs and discotheques in Mumbai, out of which 42 did not have licences.

The government had earned a revenue of Rupees 18 crore through entertainment tax from the 18 licensed establishments last year, he said. Those operating illegally were causing heavy loss of revenue to the government, he added.
