Disabled activists hunger strike enters second day in Asom
Guwahati, Dec 15 (UNI) The token hunger strike of the All Assam Pratibandhi Jutia Sangram Samity (AAPJSS) entered its second day today, demanding the immediate release of 13 of their members lodged in the district prison.
The members of the Samity were lathi-charged on two occasions on December 11 and December 12 when they were carrying out road blockade programmes to press for their demands.
They were demanding reservation in government jobs for the physically handicapped and filling up of backlog posts, among other thingss.
During the road blockade programme on December 12 in Kahilipara area of the city, 13 members of the AAPJSS were arrested and lodged in the district and jail.
AAPJSS joint secretary Ajay Kumar Sharma said, '' On the first day of our agitation, police picked up physically handicapped people in the city indiscriminately. Beggars, who have nothing to do with our group, were also picked up. '' He alleged that the police beat up the disabled agitators in Kahilipara brutally and women agitators were also handled roughly by male police.
He said no medical aid was provided to those injured in the lathicharge.
He stated that the agitation would continue until their members were set free and demands met.
