Awareness campaign by DMRC through 'Nukkad Nataks' in East Delhi

New Delhi, Dec 15 (UNI) Delhi Metro Rail Corp has embarked upon a communication campaign in East Delhi to spread awareness about the need to keep the metro clean and protect it from incidents of stone throwing that cause damage to trains and other assets.

The campaign was started with a series of 'Nukkad Nataks' (Street Plays) which were being held in Shahdara, Seelampur, Welcome and Shastri Park and adjourning colonies, a statement said today.

Drama groups consisting of eight artists performed in Hindi, Punjabi, Haryanavi and Bhojpuri dialects to explain to the general public about the penalties associated with stone throwing and spitting 'paan' in metro premises.

Throwing stones at metro trains and other property was a serious offence, which could lead to life imprisonment or rigorous imprisonment for ten years and even death sentence in case metro trains or tracks were damaged or sabotaged.

Spitting 'paan' or travelling drunk on Metro rail could lead to a fine of Rs 500 apart from forfeiture of the ticket, which the person was holding.

Unauthorised traveling on metro railway could lead to fine or imprisonment upto six months while unauthorised entry could also lead to fines and imprisonment.

The 'Nukkad Nataks' would be held in other areas subsequently but they had been started in East Delhi as incidents of stone throwing took place in the area during Delhi 'bandh' called by the traders on September 20 this year.

Over 150 Nukkad Nataks had been staged so far.

DMRC had started a campaign to develop awareness among the commuters about the importance to keep the metro clean in January 2003 after the metro began operating in East Delhi between Shahdara and Tis Hazari in December 2002.
