Asom CM releases state of Environment Report

Guwahati, De 15 (UNI) Asom Chief Minister Tarun gogoi has formally released the state of environment report, the first of its kind in the state, brought out by Asom Science, Technology and Environment Council (ASTEC).

Speaking on the occasion here yesterday, Mr Gogoi said environment is the key factor to the survival of life on earth and every effort would be made by the state government including preservation of water bodies and soil conservation to protect the environment from deforestation and erosion.

He said the Government has already constituted two committees for preservation of water bodies and soil conservation.

Mr Gogoi said that environment degradation has become a matter of concern not only for Asom, but also other parts of the world.

''Global warming'' is an indicator to the fact that there has been a radical change in weather conditions due to factors like deforestation and earth-cutting, he said adding ''that the time has come to arrest the disturbing trend for a clean and green environment worldwide ''.

He hoped that the exhaustive report brought out by ASTEC would go a long way in maintaining the ecological balance for sustainable development.
