Asom Assembly adopts resolution endorsing change of state name

Guwahati, Dec 15 (UNI) The Asom Assembly today adopted a resolution through voice vote endorsing the state Cabinet's decision to change the name of the state from Assam to Asom and move the Central government in this regard to take necessary steps as per the Constitution.

However, CPI Legislator Dhrupad Borgohain opposed adoption of the resolution sans any discussion on it.

He said since many communities in the state were airing their opposition to change of the state's name from Assam to Asom, the House needed to discuss the matter before taking a final resolution in its favour.

The AGP also supported the resolution with a bit of hesitation as no discussion was allowed on it.

The state cabinet earlier of February 27, 2006, took a decision to change the name of the state from Assam to Asom.

However, the name was yet to be changed officially as the Central government would have to approve it.
