Ahmedabad very much a terrorist target: Commissioner
Ahmedabad, Dec 15 (UNI) New city Police Commissioner Jogeswar Mahapatra today said there had been definite intelligence inputs about Ahmedabad being a target of terrorist networks for sometime.
''Danger looms large all over the nation, especially Gujarat and Ahmedabad. We have successfully tackled it earlier and we will continue to do so,'' Mr Mahapatra said while addressing to mediapersons here.
He admitted that there was an undercurrent of communal tension in the city, though it had not experienced a communal riot in the past five years.
Mr Mahapatra, who took over as Police Commissioner of Ahmedabad yesterday, said ''The undercurrent is very much there, but in limited scale. It will not be allowed to go out of bounds.'' The top cop was earlier Additional Director General (CID).
He said he would take some definite measures to make the city a safe place to live in. It has always been considered safe and should remain so.
Mr Mahapatra said a scheme for senior citizens would be introduced in the city, wherein a policeman would visit them every month and enquire about their welfare. ''This will be a confidence-building measure for the senior citizens who live on their own.'' He had implemented a similar scheme when he was the police commissioner of Vadodara.
