New Delhi, Dec 14: After a 'burst' of reality shows over the last couple of years, shows seeped in Indian culture and traditions seem to be back in vogue on television! Close on the heels of 'Betiyan: Apni Ya Paraya Dhan' and 'Saathi Re' on Star one, another serial reflecting Indian traditions and filled with the "aroma of variegated Indian colours" is to premiere on Sony entertainment television this Christmas.
'Kulvadhu', a serial set against the backdrop of traditions, strong family values and culture, will be aired on Sony starting December 25.

Set against the pageantry and rich cultural heritage of Rajasthan, 'Kulvadhu' is a love story of a girl who selflessly enters into a relationship to protect the family of the man she loved and cared for since her childhood. As the kulvadhu of the family, the protagonist Niyati takes an oath not to reveal a truth that will tarnish the family image.

To be aired from December 25, Mondays to Thursdays, 'Kulvadhu' is the story of a young, simple girl Noyati, who is passionately and unconditionally in love with her childhood friend Shaurya. Both their families would like to formalize their childhood friendship into marriage. However, shocked Niyati realises that Shaurya does not reciprocate her feelings. At this point, destiny compels Niyati into a relationship to save the family honour. She becomes the Kulvadhu of the Rathore family when she is not even legally married to Shaurya.

Addressing a press meet in the capital yesterday, Chief Creative Director, Sony entertainment television, Sandip Sikchand said, ''Kulvaddhu is a show set against the backdrop of traditions, strong family values and culture. In this serial we have tried to bring out the colourful traditions and rich cultural heritage of Rajasthan, as the family of the protagonist Niyati is settled in the Rajasthani town of Jodhpur.'' ''Infact, the USP of the show is that it has all the colourful traditions and rituals of Rajasthan interspersed in it. In the serial, we have, as far as possible, tried to make the characters speak the local dialect of Jodhpur to give it a 'Rajasthani' feel,''Sandip said.

Kulvadhu will be telecasted at 8.30 pm slot from Mondays to Thursday, thus filling in the Slot earlier occupied by the highly-successful "celebrity- based dance reality show"-'Jhalak Dikhla Ja'.

Speaking on the occasion, Anuj said the emphasis in the show would be to give it a distinct look as well as maintain a certain production quality.

Sandip asserted that 'Kulvadhu' was different from the numerous 'Saas bahu' serials and soaps on television peddling 'kitchen politics' to viewers in the name of entertainment.

''Kulvadhu is a show which is very different from the 'family sagas' being aired on Indian television today. And, it will be our earnest endeavour to ensure that the serial retains its 'unusual' flavour all through its run.'' Playing the central role of Niyati in the serial will be be a newcomer Daljit Kaur, while the role of Shaurya is being played by TV actor Imran Khan, who has earlier been seen in 'Milee' and 'Kashmeer'.

At the same time, 'Kulvadhu' features some well known names on the Indian television scene including veteran actors like Suhasini Mulay, Kitu Gidwani and Milind Gunaji.

''Performances will be one of the USPs of the serial given the presence of such veteran actors,''Sandip said.

'Kulvadhu' is the latest in the line of recent television serials focusing on the portrayal of traditional Indian values.

In the recent past serials like 'Karam Apna Apna' on Star Plus, 'Betiyan: Apni Ya Paraya Dhan' and 'Saathi Re' on Star one, made in the backdrop of Indian cultural traditions and rituals, have excited the imagination of the television viewers.
