Chennai, Dec 14 (UNI) AIADMK General Secretary J Jayalalithaa today charged the Tamil Nadu Government with ''deliberately weakening and spoiling'' the state's case in the Mullaperiyar issue.

She said the state's counsel Parasaran had made an ''unnecessary'' argument before the Supreme Court that Kerala was objecting to Tamil Nadu's works to strengthen the Mullaperiyar dam.

''It was a deliberate attempt to create a wrong impression as all strengthening works had been comepleted during my tenure itself,'' she said.

Ms Jayalalithaa said experts from the Central Water Commission had already inspected and assessed the safety of dam. Based on their report, the Supreme Court gave an order in February last that the water level of the dam could be raised to 142 ft, she pointed out.

After the Chief Ministerial-level talks held in pursuant of the SC order failed, Chief Minister M Karunanidhi should have reported back to the apex court and have sought a fresh direction. Now, they had done something which the SC had not said, she added.

''Mr Karunanidhi is selling out Tamil Nadu's interest for his own selfish political considerations,'' she charged.
