Strike in Banking sector total : BEFI
Kolkata, Dec 14: The Left trade unions sponsored 24-hour nationwide industrial strike was ''absolute and total'' in the Banking sector today, claimed Bank Employees Federation of India (BEFI) general secretary S Bardhan.
Congratulating the country's 600,000 odd bank employees for ''whole-heartedly supporting the strike'' and staying away from work in support of their demands, Mr Bardhan hoped the Union government would take appropriate note of the overwhelming mood of the general public and the bank employees throughout the country.
He said the UPA government would take immediate steps ''to change the orientation of its policies from the creamy layer of the society to the exploited masses''.
Incidentally, all the 1500 odd public and private sector bank branches in West Bengal, along with their counterparts in Regional Rural Banks, downed their shutters in support of today's general strike.
