Mizoram fetes Mary Kom

Aizawl, Dec 14 (UNI) Manipur boxer M C Mary Kom was honoured at the Zofest 2006, a festival for integrity among Mizo tribes scattered across the region.

Kom, the first Mizo woman to become a world boxing champion, was handed a citation along with a cash award of Rs 5,000.

The Manipur boxer was 'deeply touched' by the welcome she received from the people along the Aizawl-Silchar road.

''She was aware of the fact that the Mizo people have strongly supported her, but experiencing this in person was bit different,'' said a Zofest official, who received her at Vairengte.

After winning the world women's boxing title for the second time, Mary was appointed sub-inspector in Manipur Police. After her hat-trick at the world championship, she has been offered an assistant director's post in the state sports department.
