LS passes Reservations in Institutions of Higher Learning Bill
New Delhi, Dec 14 (UNI) The Lok Sabha today passed the Central Educational Institutions (Reservation in Admission) Bill, 2006, providing for reservation in admission for students belonging to the Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes and Other Bakward Classes to institutions of higher learning maintained and aided by the Central Government.
Replying to a daylong debate on the Bill, Minister of Human Resource Development Arjun Singh said a separate Bill was under preparation to provide reservation in unaided educational institutions also.
Mr Arjun Singh said the the Bill was consistent with Constitutional provisions and will meet the goal of equity and social justice.
He said the government would take further steps to provide reservation in private institutions of higher learning only after taking all political parties into confidence.
The Bill was passed after Amendments moved by Mr Vijay Kumar Malhotra(BJP) and some others seeking reservation even in minority educational institutions were negated.
