Elections to 185 Goa village panchayats to be held on May 20

Panaji, Dec 14 (UNI) The elections to the 185 village panchayats in Goa will be conducted in the may 2007 with the 20th of the month as the tentative date of poll.

Goa state Election Commissioner Mr P M Borkar, in an order issued here today, stated the notification of the Goa Panchayat and Zilla Panchayat (Election procedure) rule, 1996, shall be issued and published by the Director of Panchayat latest by March 1,2007. The said Nofication should also indicate the serial number of wards in each Panchayat which are reserved for Schedule Castes, Schedule Tribes, backward classes and the women.

The electoral rolls of the Goa Legislative Assembly prepared under the provision of the Representation of the People Act, 1950( Central Act 43 of 1951) with 1st January, 2007 as the qualifying date shall be utilised for the preparation of wardiwse voters list of the village panchayat, the notification added.

The notification in terms of section 15 of the Goa Panchayat Raj Act, 1994 read sub-rule (1) of Rule 10 of the said rules appointing the date of election shall be issued by the State Government by 10th April, 2007.
