Lucknow, Dec 14 (UNI) The Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), an ally of the United Progressive Alliance at the Centre today, advised the Congress to join in with smaller outfits if it wanted to gain power in Uttar Pradesh in the coming assembly elections.

Talking to reporters here, NCP general secretary and in charge of UP affairs Tariq Anwar said Congress should join with the Jan Morcha Gathbandhan (Alliance) for the assembly elections due early next year.

''Talks are on with the Congress to make it part of the Alliance...one of its leaders (UP Cong vice-president Siraj Mehendi) also attended our regional political seminar today,'' he said.

The NCP leader maintained that although smaller parties lacked a strong mass base, together they could give a reasonable fight to bigger parties. ''People have seen Bharatiya Janata Party, Samajwadi Party and Bahujan Samaj Party rule the state, now they are looking for a fourth alternative,'' he claimed.

Mr Anwar claimed the Jan Morcha Alliance was also looking for tie ups with the CPI, CPM and Ajit Singh's Rashtriya Lok Dal for a broader acceptability amongst the electorate.

Meanwhile, addressing party workers, NCP state unit president Dr Ramesh Dikshit alleged that the Jan Morcha was infested with ''agents'' of the ruling Samajwadi Party who were trying to create fissures within the organisation. ''They also leak out details of our strategies to the ruling party,'' he claimed.

He said Jan Morcha convener and suspended SP MP Raj Babbar was forced not to attend the NCP seminar today. ''While Mr Babbar was willing to attend it, some people ensured that he could not attend the meeting,'' he claimed.
