New Delhi, Dec 14 (UNI) State-owned telecom major Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd will add five million broadband connections by next year with a minimum download speed of 2 megabyte per second (Mbps), Communication and Information and Technology Minister Dayanidhi Maran said today.

''BSNL will add five million broadband connections with 2 Mbps speed in the year 2007,'' Mr Maran told reporters here.

Commenting on this announcement, BSNL Chairman and Managing Director A K Sinha said BSNL would start providing this speed from January 1, 2007.

Mr Sinha said the speed would vary between one and two Mbps depending on the areas, but the service charge would be the same.

''The speed will vary between 1-2 Mbps,'' Mr Sinha said.

Presently, the country's broadband penetration is three million connections.
