Undersea quake rocks northeastern Indonesia

Jakarta, Dec 13: A strong undersea earthquake shook northeastern Indonesia but there was no tsunami warning because of its great depth, an official at the country's meteorology agency said today.

The quake, of magnitude 6.5, struck at 10:48 pm (2118 IST) 252 km northeast of the city of Manado at a depth of 237 km, the official at Indonesia's meteorology and geophysical centre said by telephone.

The US Geological Survey said on its Web site that the quake measured 6.2.
