Trinamool calls for boycotting Tata products

Kolkata, Dec 13: In a new twist to the indefinite hunger strike by Ms Mamata Banerjee, the Trinamool Congress and its allies today called for boycotting Tata products in protest against setting up of small car factory on agricultural land.

In an open show of ire against the Tatas for going ahead with the project, Trinamool Congress supporters threw away and destroyed products of the company amid slogans at the venue of the hunger strike of Ms Banerjee in the city's Esplanade area.

Under the banner of ''Singur Krishi Jami Raksha Committee'', a platform of 20 organisations, the Trinamool leader had been on hunger strike that entered the tenth day today demanding that the small car site be shifted from Singur.

''We call upon all of you to boycott all Tata products as a mark of protest against going ahead with the project on fertile land,'' PDS leader Samir Putatunda, whose party is a constituent of the Committee, said.

A few hundred farmers from Singur were mobilised at the gathering in front of the Trinamool leader's dharna manch in the city's Esplanade area.

Last week, Ms Banerjee had threatened to call for boycotting Tata products.

The Trinamool action came at a time when the state Government made it clear that the proposed small car factory would be set up at Singur and the Tatas cracked on expediting the project on 997 acre of land initiating measures for creating necessary infrastructure.

However, unrelenting in her movement, Ms Banerjee continued with her hunger strike and ignored appeals even by the Governor and the Chief Minister to call it off.
