Postal department releases first perfumed stamp
Chennai, Dec 13 (UNI) The Department of Posts today released a commemorative postage stamp which emanates sandalwood fragrance.
This is the first such perfumed stamp brought out by the Postal department. The fragrant stamp will be in the denomination of Rs 15.
Tiny globules of sandalwood embedded in the stamp during printing, emanate fragrance when it is gently rubbed on its upper surface.
The Department of Posts decided to release the commemorative stamp on sandalwood as it is an integral part of Indian heritage which need to be preserved and conserved.
The sandalwood also finds mention in Indian classical literature and scriptures dating back to 2000 BC, including 'Ramayana,' the poetry of Kalidasa and also Buddhist texts which attribute it to the 'Bodhisarva Amitabha,' according to a release here.
The stamps, first day covers and information brochures would be available at all Philatelic Bureaux and counters, the release added.
