India confident of Japan's support to Indo-US N-deal
On Board Air India One, Dec 13: India today expressed confidence that Japan would support the Indo-US nuclear deal in the 45-member Nuclear Suppliers Group (NSG).
''Japan understands our needs for nuclear materal and resources,'' National Security Adviser M K Narayan told reports accompanying Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on his four-day visit to Japan.
He said ''we are fairly confident Japan will be willing to support us in the NSG.'' Mr Narayan said views between India and Japan on the Indo-US deal were evolving. ''We have discussed this subject with Japan for sometime...this is an ongoing conversation,'' he added.
His statement assumes significance given the fact that Japan, a victim of the nuclear holocaust, had imposed sanctions on India after it conducted nuclear tests in 1998.
