DPI volunteers held for defying prohibitory orders
Chennai, Dec 13 (UNI) Hundreds of Dalit Panthers of India (DPI) volunteers were taken into custody by the police today when the attempted to defy the prohibitory orders and resort to block road in the busy Part town in the city to condemn the desecration of Periyar statue at Srirangam recently.
Party General Secretary Thol Thirvamavalavan, party joint secretary Selvaperunthagai, MLA, Legislator Ravi Kumar, among others were taken into custody.
Before courting arrest, Mr Thiruvamavalavan told newspersons the 'real culprits' behind the desecration of the statue on December seven were not arrested and only some others were taken into custody.
Urging the Tamil Nadu government to immediately arrest the real culprits and punish them, the DPI leader demanded the government should forthwith release leaders of various Tamil organisations, who were arrested while resorting to agitations to protest against defacing of the statue.
