Crime rate low in Mizoram
Aizawl, Dec 13: Crime rate in Mizoram has gone down considerably since the past few years, which police officials attributed to the state's NGOs efforts in curbing social evils.
In a joint meeting of police officials and various NGOs under the police station across the state, the police officials said that criminal cases in Mizoram went down from 1,078 in 2003 to 796 in 2004 which again decreased to 555 in the following year.
From January this year till December 10, the total number of criminal cases registered at various police stations was only 438.
Police officials hoped that it would not exceed 500, thanks to the NGOs.
In the country, Mizoram has the second lowest crime rate and the lowest among the North East states.
However, the NGOs alleged that criminals are released from judicial custody too soon and urged that they were incarcerated in jails for longer period in order to effectively fight against social evils, particularly during the Christmas season.
Police insisted that those arrested for any offences, should be retained in the judicial custody till next January so that we can have a peaceful Christmas.
