Crime rate decreases in Mizoram

Aizawl, Dec 13 (UNI) The crime rate in Mizoram has gone down considerably in the past few years, police said today.

Police attributed it to the various NGOs working in the state to curb the social evils.

After a joint meeting of police officials and various NGOs, police said criminal cases in Mizoram went down from 1,078 in 2003 to 796 in 2004 which again decreased to 555 in the following year.

From January this year till December 10, the total number of criminal cases registered at various police stations was only 438.

In the country, Mizoram has the second lowest crime rate and the lowest among the North Eastern states.

Meanwhile, the NGOs have alleged that criminals are released from judicial custody very soon. They urged that they should be kept in the jails for longer period in order to effectively fight social evils.

Police also insisted that those arrested for any offences, should be retained in judicial custody till January next.
