Women's war remembered in Manipur

Imphal, Dec 12: The Nupilal (Womens' war) day was observed today throughout the state.

The day heralds a womens' movement against the colonial British Empire in 1939 in Manipur when the women folk protested the Imperial British policies.

The state function was held at the Nupilal Memorial complex, Imphal. The Governor, Dr SS Sidhu said the women folk protested the monopoly trade interest of the Britishers for the cause of justice.

The unique historical episode in the history of Manipur - ''Nupilal'' brings back to us the graphic memories of the courage and valour of Manipuri women and their spirit of patriotism he added.

He further said in Manipur, womenfolk play a vital role in all spheres of life. Their role in socio-economic spheres is of special important.

''A child on their back, vegetable loaded basket on their head, a torch in their hand braving the cold wind of winter, severe heat of summer, and heavy rains of monsoon, walking along the streets, sitting on the roadside selling vegetables for earning livelihood of their family, speaks of itself the important role of the womenfolk in the economic activities of the Manipuri society''.

As a part of the observation a play on the war was presented today at the complex by women artistes. Marathon rally, discussions on women's movement marked the day.

Nupigi Numit(Women's day) was also organised on the day at various places like Kangla hall, Khuga Tampak, Awang Laibung, Churachandpur, Presidency college Jubilee hall, Kiyan Siphai, Amujam Leikai, Thoubal, Wabagai Lamkhai Keithel, Nambol, Ningthoukhong, INA hall, Moirang etc.
