Supervalu to begin India op in Bangalore

Bangalore, Dec 12: US based Supervalu Inc, the USD 44 billion grocery chain today announced setting up of an IT development centre in the city as part of its ongoing work to support the strategic initiatives.

Company Chief Information Officer Paul Singer told newsmen here that the division in India, called Supervalu Services India (SSI), would develop end to end products mainly based on Java and other new technologies. The centre, coming up at Embassy Golf Lines, would have 50 professionals to begin with and the head count would go up to 300 in the next eight months to one year. The company would invest USD 50 million over a period of five years.

Mr Singer said that SSI associates would help in application development, technical operations, quality assurance and testing to support overall corporate IT functions including company's retail and supply chain operations. Supervalu was seeking to build a local team with strong skills in application development with a specific expertise in Java.

Supervalu Inc was one of the largest companies in the US grocery channel with annual sales of USD 44 billion. It held leading market share positions across the 50 states in that country where it run 2500 grocery stores and support 5000 grocery end points. It is also into pharmacy business, natural and organise food. It currently had two lakh employees on its rolls.
