SMC official caught red handed with bribe in Kashmir

Srinagar, Dec 12 (UNI) The Jammu and Kashmir Vigilance Organisation today caught red handed a Srinagar Municipal Corporation (SMC) official while accepting a bribe.

A vigilance spokesman said Mohammad Yaqoob Rather, an SMC senior assistant, was nabbed while accepting a bribe of Rs 6000 from Siraj-ud-Din Rather, a resident of downtown city.

Rather, a contractor, had been allotted work related to the development of a graveyard at Buchapora near here at an estimated cost of Rs 1.26 lakh, he added.

The spokesman said the accused demanded Rs 30000 from the complainant for delivery of the allotment order following which Rather lodged a complaint with the Vigilance Organisation.

Vigilance sleuths laid a trap and nabbed the accused on the spot, he said, adding his personal search led to the seizure of Rs 18,000 in addition to the bribe amount of Rs 6000. The official's new Alto car was also seized from the office premises.

A case has been registered against the accused.
