Aizawl, Dec 12: As part of the on-going airport modernisation programme, the North Eastern Council (NEC) has sanctioned Rs 6.58 crore for upgradation of Mizoram's lone airport on par with international standards.

The upgradation progammes include extension of the fire station, construction of perimeter road around the airport, treatment of terminal building roof against rain and construction of a waiting shed outside the terminal building.

According to Officer on Special Duty Wg Cdr Joe Lalhmingliana, the state government would install an instrument landing system (ILS) to avoid the frequent flight cancellation experienced because of poor visibility.

Also new to the airport are the two fire tenders that have been imported from Czechoslovakia called ''Fire Crush Tender'', each costing Rs 2.5 crore to reach Aizawl.

Besides, to complement the ILS, Airport Authority of India will be installing a Digital Current Weather Information System (DCWIS). The system now in use is visual flight rules in which a trained meteorological officer uses line of sight to estimate visibility.
