NDRI launches sale of special curd

Karnal, Dec 12 (UNI) The National Dairy Research Institute (NDRI) has launched the sale of its newly developed curd named 'Probiotic Dahi' that will help lower blood cholesterol, hypertension and diabetes and improve the immune system.

Launching the sale the special curd today from the campus milk parlour, NDRI Director Suhsil Kumar said it had been developed by using special micro-organisms called ''Probiotics'' having wonderful health benefits.

The Institute, he said, had initiated action to get the product patented.

He said that the Haryana Dairy Development Co-operative Federation had shown interest in transfer of technology of Probiotic Dahi to sell it under their brand name ''Vita''.

Dr (Mrs) P R Sinha, Principal Scientist of Animal Biochemsitry Division of NDRI, who led the research team which developed 'probiotic Dahi' said it would also prove helpful in alleviating lactose intolerance.

Dr Sinha said that studies conducted in her laboratory indicated that the probiotic Dahi had cholesterol lowering, anti-hypertensive, Antioxidant (Anti-ageing), immuno-modulatory and anti-diabetic effect.

Dr Sinha said probiotic micro-organisms mainly consist of two types of lactic acid bacteria --lactobacillus and Bifidobacteria--which reside in gastrointestinal tract of a normal individual.

The imbalance, she said, due to decrease of probiotic micro-organisms caused several deleterious effects on body resulting in diarrhoea and colon carcinogenesis etc.

She claimed that the probiotic dahi developed by her team contained bacteria which would restore the balance.

Dr Sinha said it improved the immune status of the body and protected it from many diseases by eliminating pathogenic bacteria from intestines by competitive exclusion.
