Man threatens suicide; demands removal of Periyar statue

Coimbatore, Dec 12 (UNI) Tension prevailed at Singanallur near here when a Hindu Makkal Katchi (HMK) activist threatened to commit suicide by jumping from a mobile phone tower if their demand for removal of Periyar statue from near the Rajagopuram of Sri Ranganathar Temple at Srirangam is not fulfilled.

According to police, Prabhu (35), standing atop the 100-feet tower, demanded the removal of the statue and withdrawal of cases filed against HMK state President Arjun Sampath, allegedly involved in the last week's statue desecration.

However, police succeeded in pacifying him following which he came down.
