Left pledges support to Dec 14 strike
Chennai, Dec 12 (UNI) The Left parties in Tamil Nadu today pledged support to the December 14 general strike, called by the Sponsoring Committee of Trade Unions, to protest against the Centre's 'anti- people and anti-labour' policies.
In a joint statement here, Communist Party of India (Marxist) state unit secretary N Varadarajan and CPI state unit secretary D Pandian said their parties were extending total support to the strike as the demands of the trade unions were "just".
They appealed to the people of the state to extend their fullest support and make the general strike, a grand success.
The BKNK Sangh of the Food Corporation of India (FCI) and the Tamil Nadu unit of Bank Employees Federation of India (BEFI) also offered their support to the strike.
BKNK Sangh President V M Damodaran, in a statement said that FCI employees would join the strike as the government policy went against the interest of FCI. As the Centre had allowed multinationals to procure wheat, government agencies like FCI could not procure sufficient quantity of wheat, he said.
