German detained with firecracker at Munich airport

BERLIN, Dec 12 (Reuters) German authorities detained a passenger who tried to board a plane with a home-made firecracker, which triggered a security alert at Munich airport, police said today.

Security officials caught the 47-year-old German carrying a small pipe filled with gunpowder attached to a fuse in his hand luggage, police said. He wanted to use the firecracker on holiday in Egypt at New Year's Eve.

The man could now face charges for violating Germany's air security laws, while his wife and an accompanying friend were allowed to board the plane to Egypt.
