Environmentalist demands recalling option for elected people

Shimla, Dec 12 (UNI) Himalayan Niti Abhiyan Samiti (HNAS) President Upamanyu Kulbhusan today demanded an amendment to the Peoples' Representation Act, saying people should be provided with an option for recalling their elected representatives.

The elected representatives have been acting as dictators during their five year tenure and people should be provided with an option for recalling the elected representatives if they fail in their duties towards the people who had elected them, he said at a press conference here.

Mr Upmanyu said this would provide people an opportunity to teach a lesson to their representatives who act differently while in power and when in opposition.

Referring to the setting up of the 1,000 MW hydel project in Kinnuar, he said the Congress, which was now unleashing repression on the protesting villagers, was supporting their cause while it was in the opposition.

He said either the state government was continuing with the project under Centre's pressure or was acting on its own, while disregarding the view of the people who had brought it to power.
