Noisy start to Asom Assembly session

Guwahati, Dec 11 (UNI) The winter session of the Asom Assembly today witnessed a noisy beginning as the United Opposition, led by the regional Asom Gana Parishad (AGP), was repeatedly trying to put the government on the mat over the deteriorating law and order situation in the state.

The Speaker had to adjourn the House for ten minutes during Question Hour as members from the Treasury Bench and Opposition parties involved in a heated exchange of words after the latter accused the government of failing to take action against notorious criminal Pakhi Mian.

Pakhi is allegedly involved in the elimination of Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) official Tarun Dutta in the heart of the city recently.

A noisy scene prevailed in the House after the Opposition members expressed dissatisfaction over the reply given by Minister Rockybul Hussain that the government was taking appropriate action to nab culprits involved in the killing of the DRI official and that the investigation was being held by the CID of the state police.

Later, the Opposition AGP, BJP, United Democratic Front (UDF), CPI and the CPM staged a walkout after the Speaker reserved ruling on the issue of admissibility of an adjournment motion brought by the Opposition to discuss the deteriorating law and order situation, killing of people in bomb blasts, alleged excess by police and the army in the name of counter-insurgency operation.

A debate raged in the House after the Treasury Bench questioned the admissibility of the adjournment motion. The Opposition parties then walked out after the Speaker reserved his ruling on the issue declining to agree to the Opposition demand for the discussion on issues related to law and order situation.
