Minister inaugurates SSCP dredging in TN

Madurai, Dec 11 (UNI) Union Minister for Shipping and Road Transport T R Baalu today inaugurated the commencement of dredging in the Adam's Bridge area off Rameswaram coast.

This is part of the 2233-crore Sethu Samudram Shipping Channel Project (SSCP). The dredging of the channel was taken up by the Dredging Corporation of India (DCI).

DCI has stationed dredging vessels starting with the capacity of dredging 30,000 cubic metres daily.

The SSCP of 157-km length required dredging at two points- 54 km dredging near Point Camere in the Palk Strait and 35-km stretch in the Adam's Bridge.

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh had inaugurated the first phase of dredging on July two, last year.
