Moga, Dec 11 (UNI) Authorities here have rescued a nine-year-old mentally challenged child, kept chained for about six years by his family.

Acting on a complaint, a team led by Deputy Commissioner Moga, Dr Arvinder Singh, visited the residence of Seera Singh, a dalit of the Sukhanand village in Baghapurana sub-division and found his nine-year-old son, Bhinder, chained.

Mr Singh immediately got the child released and directed the civil surgeon of Moga to get the boy admitted in civil hospital.

The district Red Cross Society has offered to bear the expenses.

Bhinder's parents explained that when their son was three years, old he had high fever and then pneumonia. Due to poverty, the family got him treated by a local unregistered medical practitioner.

Even after prolonged treatment, his condition worsened and ultimately he suffered from mental retardedness.

The boy turned so violent that he started beating and throwing stones at others.

They were left with no other alternarive but to chain him.

The family was now grateful that their child would be provided treatment and hope to see him walk free one day.
