One militant, jawan killed in Poonch

Jammu, Dec 9 (UNI) A militant was today gunned down in bordering Poonch district while the Army also lost one jawan during the encounter, an official spokesman said.

Defence spokesman Lt Col S D Goswami said, acting on a tip-off, troops of 39 Rashtriya Rifles (RR) and police cordoned off a specific area at Banola village, but were fired upon by the militants.

''In the fierce gunbattle, one militant was eliminated while one jawan also died,'' he said.

The identitity of the soldier and the slain militant could not be ascertained yet.

More details are awaited as the encounter was still on, he added.
