Indian arbitration needs to improve : Justice Balakrishnan

Kochi, Dec 9 (UNI) Supreme Court Judge Justice K G Balakrishnan today said the arbitration system in the country should be improved to dispense quick justice to the aggrieved parties.

Adressing a gathering at the national convention on '' Diverse Aspects of Arbitration Law and Promoting Institutional Arbitration'', Justice Balakrishnan said the arbitration system in the country was lagging behind other countries and this needs to be changed.

''The real arbitration was eluding India and this has to change.

Indian arbitration needs a lot of improvement to give quick remedy and enforcemnt of awards,'' he said.

He said considering the trade activities here, the city should be the centre of Indian arbitration.

'' There were lot of pending cases in the courts as the traditional methods of litigation was slow,'' he noted.

Speaking on the occasion, Chief Justice of Kerala High Court Justice V K Bali said the process of arbitration was a means to clear the backlog of cases in various courts.

He said certain cases pending in various courts were complicated and through arbitration they can be resolved by seeking expert opinion.

He also stressed the importance of awareness programme on arbitration.

Justice Bali also launched the official website of the local chapter of Indian Council of Arbitration (ICA).

State High Court Judge Justice R Basant, Chairman of ICA C P Jain, Executive Director of ICA G K Kwatra were present on the occasion.
