Delhi Police should concentrate on policing only: Sheila

New Delhi, Dec 9 (UNI) Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit today asked the city police to focus on its core duties rather than activities not related to maintaining law and order, and security.

We had to tackle the social menace of gender bias and violence by involving civil society in a big way... To achieve this sense of a secure environment, it was advisable that Delhi Police concentrated on core police functions and shed the additional burden of licensing and other activities not related to law and order, and internal security issues, she said while addressing the National Development Council Meeting here.

This would release huge manpower for tackling this menace and make the force more efficient, she said and added that it was an issue of great concern and public safety.

Delhi government would set up effective monitoring systems and take steps to remove those factors that had been identified as consituting risk or creating a feeling of vulnerability for wonem, Ms Dikshit said.

The quality of available services including helplines, medical facilities, legal aid units, shelter homes and counseling centres for women could be imporved, she added.
