AASU for protection and security of local people
Guwahati, Dec 9 (UNI) The All Asom Students Union (AASU) today reiterated its demands for the safety, security and benefit of the people of Asom following the execution of the 2000 MW Lower Subansiri Hydro Power Project in Arunachal Pradesh by National Hydro Power Corporation (NHPC).
AASU advisor Samujjal Bhattacharjya told newspersons here today that they were not against the development of the region or creation of a 116 mt high dam over the Subansiri river for the project, but they were concerned over the safety, security and benefit of the local people residing in the downstream in Asom.
The NHPC should ensure full benefit, including employment opportunities, to the local people while executing the mega hydro project over the Subansiri, he added.
Mr Bhattacharjya said the NHPC, Asom Government and the AASU met here yesterday to resolve all the related matters of the project and decided to constitute a five-member committee to go through the downstream impact of the project.
The members of the committee will be from the Guwahati University, Dibrugarh Univesity and the IIT, Guwahati.
The committee will submit its reports on the impact of the downstream relating to the security and safety of the people living in the downstream of the river within four months. Till then the work on the main project will remain suspended, he said.
AASU president Sankar Prasad Rai and its general secretary Tapan Kumar Gogoi were also present.
