Zip Sports zoom into finals

Pune, Dec 8 (UNI) Mumbai's strong title contenders and last year's runners up Zip Sports sprang a big surprise on their city mates and tournament favourites Spring Club beating them 2-1 to enter the final of the PYC-ATC Snooker Challenge 2006 at the PYC (Hindu) Gymkhana hall here today.

Karan Anand gave Spring Club a great start with a facile 4-0 frames win over Siddarth Parekh in the best of seven frames semi-finals to raise the hopes of Spring Club. The burly Sunny Dawar however, shattered their dream by recording a tension packed tussle triumphing against Rishab Pandya, by 4-2 frames.

Buoyed by the equaliser Varun Taneja gave Mrinal Modak no quarters when zooming to a 4-0 straight frames victory over him to see his team through into the finals of the tournament for the second year in running. Zip Sports had lost to Turf Club in the finals last year.

Karan Anand gave a scintillating display when ousting Siddarth Parekh 4-0 in the opening match, in the process recording a break of 62 in the fourth and last frame to clinch a clean clinical win, only see Sunny Dawar hit back to restore parity and Varun Taneja, spoil their chances in the decider over Modak.

Zip await the winners of hosts PYC (Hindu) Gymkhana 'A' versus 147 Snookers Club in the finals of the PYC-ATC (Clearing&Shipping Pvt Ltd) finals tomorrow, this year in the best of seven frames final to commence from 1630 hrs onwards. The prize distribution will take place at 2000 hrs.
