MK urges Prez agree to HC proceedings in Tamil

Chennai, Dec 8: Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M Karunanidhi today urged President APJ Abdul Kalam to give his consent to the resolution passed by the State Assembly, for the conduct of all proceedings in Madras High Court in Tamil.

Mr Karunanidhi, after a more than 30-minute talk with the President in Delhi, said that he gave a copy of the resolution, and urged Dr Kalam to give his consent to the resolution, under article 348(2) of the constitution.

The President assured the Chief Minister that he would definitely look into the matter, an official release here said.

The State Assembly, on December six had, unanimously passed a resolution, seeking President APJ Abdul Kalam's consent for conducting all proceedings in Tamil language in the High Court.

Moving the resolution, M Karunanidhi had said article 348(2) read with section 7 of the Official Languages Act, 1963, provided for the proceedings of the High Court to be in the official language of the state, subject to the authorisation of the Governor of the state after obtaining the consent of the President, he said.
