Swamy condemns TN police for accusing Hindu leader
Chennai, Dec 8 (UNI) Janata Party President Subramanian Swamy today condemned Tamil Nadu police for including well-known Hindu leader Swamy Dayanand Saraswati as an accused in the FIR in the alleged damaging of the statue of rationalist leader 'Periyar' E V Ramasamy at Srirangam.
While the culprits who had taken law into their hands for disfiguring the statue should be brought to book, the dragging of the name of the revered Swamiji was not only ridiculous but sinister, he said in a statement here.
He urged Chief Minister M Karunanidhi to take action against the police officer who registered the FIR. By including the swamiji's name as an accused merely for issuing a statement against the installation of the statue, the local police had violated several Supreme Court judgements, including the one in the famous Bhajan Lal case in 1992.
Mr Swamy said he had asked his party workers in Tiruchirapalli to obtain a copy of the FIR, after which he would approach the Madurai Bench of Madras High Court to quash the FIR and pass necessary strictures against the police officer concerned.
