Injured Gammon India engineer dies today
Guwahati, Dec 8 (UNI) The gauge construction work between Lumding and Silchar has been suspended since yesterday after a shooting incident where civil engineer Debojit Sen, who was critically injured, died this evening at a nursing home here.
Debojit (24) and two other engineers were critically wounded as the anti-talks faction of the DHD sprayed bullets from AK-47 rifles near Maibong in NC Hills district on Thursday afternoon.
All the three engineers are employees of the Gammon India, the construction giant, engaged in the work, which has been going on at a snail's pace as the rebels often ambushed the workers and engineers.
Police said suspected rebels attacked Gammon India Ltd camp and opened fire critically injuring engineer Debojit and assistant engineer Ajoy Banarjee (28). They were admitted to Haflong civil hospital after preliminary treatment at Maibang hospital.
Most of the engineers and other workers of different construction companies there have either fled or stopped work after the gunfiring.
Earlier all the construction companies stopped work citing inadequate security for them. The work had remained suspended for three months this year before Governor Lt Gen Ajay Sinha intervened promising security to them.
The Asom government was supposed to deploy a column of the army there.
