Great potential for Kerala in commodity futures market: FMC

Kochi, Dec 8 (UNI) Forward Markets Commission Chairman S Sundareshan today said Kerala has great potential for trade in commodities furures markets in the coming years.

Speaking to mediapersons after a conference of the members of the National Commodities Exchanges in the south zone here, Mr Sundareshan said the farmers in the state have information on prices of agro-products and stand in good stead in the commodities market.

The farmers from the northern states did not have this information and their awareness was very low, he said the farmers in Kerala can trade in rubber, pepper and spices in the market competitively.

He said producers, importers, exporters, processors and stockists would benefit from regulated futures trading.

The futures market in the country has grown considerably in the last two years with more than 90 commodities traded in the exchanges with daily volume of trade touching Rs 10,000 crore, he said adding that this year the total turnover has crossed Rs 24,00,000 crore as on November 30.
